An aluminum can is a one-time container for packaging primarily made of aluminum. It is most commonly used for food and beverages such as milk and soup, but also for products such as oils, chemicals, and other liquids.
Aluminium cans are more malleable and lighter than steel cans (aluminium is one-third as heavy as steel), and also do not rust or corrode. Aluminium is an element, whereas steel is an alloy made mainly of iron and carbon.
For all kinds of drinks, including beers, soft drinks and juices, about 280 billion (280,000,000,000) are made every year worldwide.
Aluminum cans help to preserve the quality of drinks for a long time. Aluminum cans are completely impervious to oxygen, sun, moisture, and other contaminants. They don’t rust, are corrosion-resistant, and have one of the longest shelf lives of any packaging.
Many other aluminium and steel items can be recycled along with food tins and drink cans, including aerosols, foil take-away trays and tomato puree tubes, yet many still go to landfill. If we recycle more cans we can reduce the amount of raw materials needed to produce new products.
